Alabama Shakes

This weeks "Artist Of The Week" is band that I feel is a refreshing take on rock music. This band goes by the name Alabama Shakes. The band consist of lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboard player Ben Tanner, and drummer Steve Johnson.  The band originated in Athens, Georgia back in 2009 when Brittany Howard and Zac Cockrell who both attended the same high school and started writing songs together after school. Alabama Shakes released the four-song EP Alabama Shakes September 2011, which gained media attention and earned them an invitation to play at the CMJ Music Marathon industry showcase in New York. The successful CMJ show in October 2011 caught the attention of Jon Pareles of The New York Times, who praised  Brittany Howard's singing and compared her to Janis Joplin as well as the band's energy and musicianship. With kind of exposure and feedback Alabama Shakes made MTV's list of Eleven Artists To Watch In 2012. In November 2011 they were signed to Rough Trade Records in the U.K and ATO  Records in the United States. By February 2012 the band was nominated for a MTV U Woodie for Best Live Performance and most recently they were nominated for three Grammy Awards at the 2013 Grammy Awards which included Best New Artist and Best Rock Performance. What I love about this band is that you can tell that even though they are a rock band/group a lot of musical influence are mixed together to get there unique sound. I also Brittany's strong bluesy tone over the rock influenced tones. Their Grammy nominated song "Hold On" is what got my attention so take a listen and tell me what you think. Jarvis

The weeks "Artist Of The Week" comes from an R&B crooner who has a few false starts to reaching his musical destiny. But I feel that this time around is truly his time to shine. This artist goes by the name of Jarvis. Jarvis who is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma been his musical journey at the age of 12 when he started doing local talent shows. This allowed him to perfect his craft as a singer and a stage performer. In 2004 Jarvis was discover by music mogul Jermaine Dupri, founder of So So Def Recordings.  Instantly recognizing the young singer’s star potential, JD added Jarvis to his roster which then led to the singer’s first single “Radio.”This song climbed  Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. However, before Jarvis could see the release of his debut album JD was appointed Executive Vice President of another label. At this point Jarvis felt a lack of attention to him as an artist. At this time Jarvis regrouped and with the support of his family continued on in pursuit of his musical dreams which landed him at the doors of the Atlanta based label, Disturbing Tha Peace Records. The label made Jarvis two offers. The first was to have the label’s co-founder and flagship artist, three time Grammy Award winner, Ludacris, appear on Jarvis’ second single “Pretty Girl.”  The second was an offer to join DTP’s roster.  Though the partnership didn’t yield any other releases following “Pretty Girl,” the experience did prove to be an important step along the way to Jarvis’ future. Now at the age of 23 Jarvis has land a deal with  Capitol Music Group in 2012. In September, he independently released his mixtape entitled "Heartache", featuring collabos with DJ Khaled, Waka Flocka Flame and Lil Scrappy. With this new found passion and drive for his music his first musical release called "Make a Little Room,” which is currently stirring up major radio buzz at R&B stations. I think Jarvis's time in the spotlight has finally arrived. So take a listen and tell me what you think. Emmy Rossum

This weeks "Artist Of The Week" comes from a female that is best known for her acting abilities and if you are a fan of the "Showtime" hit show "Shameless" you know who I am talking about it is none other than Emmy Rossum. Born Emmanuelle Grey "Emmy" Rossum on September 12, 1986. Emmy is not just a outstanding actress but a talented singer and songwriter. Emmy has had roles in such films as "Mystic River"," The Day After Tomorrow" and "The Phantom Of The Opera" which gained her critical acclaim for her performance as well as her singing talents. In 2007 she released her debut album called "Inside Out". What got my attention was her song called " These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)"  off her current album called "Sentimental Journey" What I love about her sound is that it has a 1920's club vibe to it but she is able to put a contemporary modern spin on it. Which I find quite interesting and refreshing. So take a listen and tell me what you think. Remember you can follow me on twitter @StarsOnTheRise and like my page on facebook just look for the logo!
