Jhene Aiko
Hello everyone! I hope you have had a great week so far and I hope each one of you tuned into the Grammy Awards on Sunday. I think this years show was a great one and congrats to all of the winners. Now back to business of another "Artist Of The Week" and who knows they may see a Grammy Award in their future. This weeks Artist is a young female who I think has the potential to do big things in the music industry her name is Jhene Aiko. Jhene was born in Los Angeles, California on March 16, 1988. She is an American singer and songwriter who has been apart of the music industry longer then you might think. Her older sisters Miyoko and Jamila were in the R&B group Gyrl and toured with Immature, who were signed to MCA/Silas Records.
This led to Jhené’s first meeting with producer Chris Stokes when she
was five years old, and eventually he heard her sing. When B2K signed
with Epic Records, Jhené was signed as well. She served as the opening
act for B2K on their Scream Tour 3. Jhene appeared in numerous music videos including B2K's debut video Uh Huh and P.Y.T.'s Same Ol' Same Ol' (Remix). Jhené also has songs featured on the soundtracks of "Barbershop","The Master of Disguise", You Got Served,[24] "The Proud Family and Byou. She released a video for her single NO L.O.V.E (re-recorded from Tha' Rayne version in 2002) which debuted on BET's 106 & Park when she was 15 years old. Soon after she was set to her self-titled debut album but the album was never released due to
tension at the record label Epic, in which Aiko asked to be released
from the label. Aiko then began to focus on school.
In 2007, Aiko made a return to music, in an interview she spoke on the
choice saying “Shortly before I conceived my daughter, I stepped back
into the field and took a meeting with a label head. In this meeting, I
was innocently told, to ‘sell’ myself when walking into these meetings.
“That’s when I decided I would ‘sail’ myself rather than sell myself.” In 2012, Aiko met with No I.D., record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam, who ended up signing Aiko to his Artium Records imprint through Def Jam. Aiko released the track "3:16AM" which was made available for digital download on iTunes September 4, 2012. In June 2013, Aiko was featured on the Big Sean song "Beware", which ended up reaching the Top 40 in the United States. This was her first song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100. In October 2013, it was revealed Jhené Aiko would open for Canadian rapper Drake on his Would You like a Tour? concert tour.[35][36][37] She had previously collaborated with Drake on his third album Nothing Was the Same (2013), lending her vocals on the tracks "Wu-Tang Forever" and "From Time". Aiko then released her debut EP Sail Out, on November 12, 2013. "Bed Peace" featuring Childish Gambino was released as the album's second single on September 17, 2013. What I love about her is that she has this strong vocal ability that that seem to also be easy and effortless. I their is nothing more I can say I just love her. RaVaughn
Happy Wednesday to all of my wonderful "Stars On The Rise" followers it is that time to pick another "Artist Of The Week". Once again I was feeling in a very soulful place with the artist that I pick for this week. This week's "Artist Of The Week" is a soulful female singer that has talents that include both singing and songwriting it is none other than RaVaughn. RaVaughn was born in Carson, California and since she was a child had a strong love and passion for music. RaVaughn's passion for music started at an early age. At age 16,
RaVaughn won two rounds and qualified for the finals in "Showtime at the
Apollo". After attending college in New York and putting out a few demos she became a background singer on the hit TV show Glee for three seasons. Shortly thereafter she was signed to Ne-Yo's imprint Compound University and soon after to Columbia Records in 2011. What got my attention about RaVaughn is her soulful vocal tone that remind me a little of Anita Baker but she puts this fresh contemporary spin on her sound to make it current. I think she has a vocal style that can make her kind of music timeless for many years to come. So take a listen and tell me what you think. The Importance Of Gaining Right To Music
We
all know that music artist all about expressing their musical creativity and
musical expression. All great music artists have artist that they look up to
and admire their musical works. Most music artist find their inspiration in
another artist musical work and want to use or take that musical work to make
something new with it. What most of these music artists fail to remember in the
mist of all of that creativity they need to gain permission to use that work.
In this special blog post I will be discussing three different legal issues
that all have to do with protecting musical work.
1. Legal Problems: Kanye West Sued For
‘Bound 2′ Sample:
This article
discusses Hip Hop artist Kanye West being sued by Ricky Spicer for having his
voice sampled on Kanye’s song Bound 2
with out his permission. He is suing Kanye for both money made on the song and
for his voice to be taken off the song.
Based on the
information provided on this lawsuit I feel that Ricky Spicer did have the
right to sue Kanye and his label for using his voice on the song. I think if
they did not ask him for permission to use it they should pay him a portion of
money made on the song as well as any future money made on the song.
2. Marvin Gaye's Family & Robin Thicke:
Son May Sue Over 'Blurred Lines' And 'Got To Give It Up':
In this article
R&B artist music artist Robin Thicke is suing Marvin Gaye’s family to
protect his song Blurred Lines from
being compared to one of Marvin Gaye’s songs called Got To Give It Up. Robin wants to keep anyone from make any type of
comparison between the two songs of any kind.
I think that
this is a very unnecessary lawsuit that Robin Thicke has started. I think the
better question is why is he so concerned about people make that comparison. If
he did steal anything and has the proof that it all original work then he has
nothing to worry about. I think that this case that is just a waste of
everyone’s time.
In this article
a company by the name of TufAmerica who owns the right to a song called Hook and Sling are suing Hip Hop artist
Jay-Z for sampling the song in his 2009 song Run This Town. What makes the lawsuit interesting is that this is
the same company who sued The Beastie Boy’s for sampling a song on one of their
earlier albums right after one of the group members died in 2012.
I think that
this company had the right to sue if music that they owned was used without
permission. My question is why does this company wait so long to file a suit. I
think this is an example of someone waiting to make the most money they can. I
think that if the song had not been a huge hit they would have never started
any type of lawsuit. That why in some case I feel that limitations should be
set on how long you can wait to sue a person for using or sampling a persons
musical work.
I think that
all of three of three of these cases have something in common the importance of
protecting your musical work and getting permission to use that work. All three
have a different take on ownership and getting permission to use someone else
from using your musical work. I think this also points out the need to pay
attention and keep track of your musical property so that years later you are
not listening to one of your favorite songs you have loved for years has been
using a piece of musical work that you wrote many years to late. I hope you
found this post informative. Remember you can follow me on Twitter

During our small break Queen B released her fifth album Beyonce (The Visual Album) That made history when she released it with no promotion of any kind and it still debut at number 1 in many countries around the world. So in celebration of Beyonce we will go back in time to her first single as a solo artist "Crazy In Love". So hope you enjoy! This weeks "Artist Of The Week" is the alumni of one of my favorite shows "The Voice" it is none other than Sasha Allen. Before making her debut on "The Voice" in season for she was already making her presence known within the music industry. This 31 year old beauty from Harlem, New York has appeared on Broadway in the 2009 revival of "Hair" and 2010 revival of "West End". She has also had the privilege of singing background for artist that include Alicia Keys, John Legend and "Voice" coaches Usher and Christina Aguilera. Since she was eliminated after making it to top 5 on "The Voice' we have not heard much from her but I hope to see big things from her in the future. While watching her on "The Voice" I saw a true artist with real talent and star quality to make a huge impact on the music industry. I truly believe that she is the next big "Star On The Rise" So take a listen and tell me what you think.
